Mooloolah Valley kitchen renovation

Alex and Tim’s home is a Mooloolah Valley original, the oldest homestead in the valley with sweeping views of the countryside and plenty of character.

However, the home was tired and in need of a refresh. An extension in the 1990s added space and a yellow and black colour scheme that Alex and Tim were keen to modernise. It was also time to update the kitchen, living area, bathrooms and laundry.

Comfortable and family-friendly

Embarking on a home renovation with Farmer Constructions, Alex’s vision was for a more contemporary space with a touch of luxury that was also liveable and functional for their young family.

“We wanted something that looked really nice and that we could comfortably live in. For us, there’s no point having a picture perfect home if it’s not family friendly. We needed everything to have functionality and for the space to work for us. That meant plenty of storage and the ability to hide clutter so it looks tidy without too much effort,” Alex said.

Alex, a Registered Nurse and Instagram influencer contacted Dani after Farmer Constructions was recommended by someone on a local Facebook group.

“Sometimes you meet someone and it just feels right. Both Tim and I felt comfortable about working with Dani from the get-go. Dani is super friendly and super open. Having people in our home for so long, with small kids, we needed someone we could all feel at ease with and a team that would fit into a family environment,” Alex explained.

Planning and staging

The renovation took place in winter so having a functioning bathroom throughout was essential. The Farmer Constructions team staged construction so the home remained functional throughout the project.

“Dani was really accommodating. Instead of doing everything at once which would have been quicker, we staged it, starting with our ensuite, followed by the laundry and the girl’s bathroom.

The talented Kat of De Vere Design Co translated Alex’s mood board themes and ideas into a series of colours and textures carried throughout the renovated rooms for continuity.

“Our style is classic but also fresh and not boring. Everyone goes for white and timber or white and beige but I’m not a beige person. At first we were working with whites but Kat suggested opting for light shades of colours to add some character and better reflect our personalities so we carried that colour scheme throughout.” Alex said

Reimagining the kitchen…and a butler’s pantry

Top of Alex’s wish list for the project was a reimagined kitchen with plenty of storage and food preparation space.

Accomplishing this required rethinking the entire living area which lacked a sense of flow. Removing a redundant wall offered better functionality and created room for the ultimate butler’s pantry (see image below).

The central open kitchen was updated, with new cabinetry, an oversized L-shaped stone bench, stunning dining nook with window seat and plenty of natural light streaming in.

VJ panelling and polished timber floorboards beautifully preserve the farmhouse’s original charm. The random lay floor to ceiling tile feature is a stunning point of interest while bringing together all the subtle colours of the space.

“We just love the tiled feature wall and massive splashback in the kitchen. We really wanted floor to ceiling tiles as they make such an impact. The beautiful style is continues through to the splashback in the butler’s pantry. The random lay is quite unusual … again we wanted something a little unusual, a simple point of difference that wasn’t overwhelming.”

Tiles a standout feature of bathroom renovations

Farmer Constructions prides itself on hiring on the best trades in the business. Many customers comment on the workmanship of our projects, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

With different complementary tiles being such a strong feature of the bathroom renovations and kitchen, having a meticulous tiler was essential for this job.

“The craftsmanship across all the tiling is just exceptional,” said Alex. “There’s such attention to detail which I really like. Everyone complements us on the tile choice and how well they are laid,” Alex said.

“Nothing was too much trouble”

Like many home renovators, one of the biggest challenges for Alex was finding things she liked but could also afford.

“I have champagne tastes but we renovated at the peak of Covid. Things were very expensive and it was tricky to get raw materials at the prices they were previously. Both Dani and Kat managed to deliver a stunning result for a really reasonable price.”

Alex made special mention of how well the project was coordinated by Dani and the Farmer Constructions team.

“Nothing was too much trouble. Dani would always pick up the phone if I had an issue. If we were expecting a particular trade, they would always come when he told me they would. Everything was really well coordinated,” said Alex.

“We were really happy with the whole experience. If we had any more renovations, I would definitely get Dani and Farmer Constructions back to do them. I know what they can deliver and how much good craftsmanship means to them. We tell everyone speak to these guys.”
