Transform your bathroom into a stunning contemporary space that is a dream to spend time in by drawing on the latest bathroom trends.
If you’re planning a renovation, start here for some ideas and inspo. Current bathroom trends are mixed bag of raw and natural organic textures, lighting with flair and contrasting bold colours. And the good news is that most of these trends are styles that will stand the test of time.
Wood-effect tiles and matt black tapware are emerging trends here in Queensland, while concrete look floors and niches continue to be popular.
1. Matte black tapware
One of our favourite bathroom trends here at Farmer Constructions, matte black tapware looks classy and makes a bold statement. It works well with just about any colour scheme and is less likely to show up fingerprints.
2. Herringbone and double herringbone tiles
Many different types of tiles can be used to create a herringbone effect, where the tiles are laid at a 45 degree angle. This technique makes for elegant flooring or a stunning feature wall. A herringbone pattern generally uses the same amount of tile but takes longer to lay.
3. Black and white
Bold, striking and classic, black and white never really goes out of style. Choose contrasting wall and floor colours, add matte black tapware for impact or pair with the concrete look or timber for a softer aesthetic.
4. Strip drains
Strip drains are durable, ideal for tiled showers and look a lot more elegant than traditional shower drains. They work beautifully with tiled showers and are great for quickly eliminating water from the shower recess.
5. Concrete-look floors
The concrete look is a trend that shows no sign of disappearing any time soon. Sophisticated and minimalist, the concrete look is an ideal foundation for a contemporary or industrial bathroom aesthetic. There are several ways to achieve a concrete style finish including with oversize tiles, architectural concrete and microcement.
6. Under cabinetry and niche lighting
Custom bathroom lighting is a thing in bathroom trends right now and there is no better way to create a welcoming, subtle mood than lighting behind, under or around other elements. Low LED strip lighting can give an appearance of floating walls or add a soft glow from under counters and niches.
7. Natural timber finishes
Timber never goes out of style. From vanities to flooring and even upcycled barn doors, timber instantly adds a natural and earthy look that always pairs well with white, black or concrete.
8. Floating vanities
Floating or wall hung vanities look modern and sleek. Add a shelf below for storing rolled up towels or keep the area clear and minimalist. Can be custom made to your requirements or purchased off the shelf.
9. Mirrored cabinets
Timber never goes out of style. From vanities to flooring and even upcycled barn doors, timber instantly adds a natural and earthy look that always pairs well with white, black or concrete.
10. Niches
We love a niche here at Farmer Constructions as do many of our Sunshine Coast clients. The options really are endless when it comes to niches, which are recessed shelves often finished with tiles. They’re ideal for in-shower storage – no more rusty shower caddies needed!
11. Rain shower heads
Rain shower heads are the latest day spa trend to make it into our bathrooms. They’re mounted on the ceiling and designed to mimic the sensation of rain covering your body with a consistent stream of water. Some people find this more relaxing.
12. Pendant lights
Pendant lights are everywhere at the moment and are used as a design feature as well as adding ambient light. There are so many ways to use pendant lights – between mirrors, over or on either side of the vanity, or in a corner. Strict rules cover how lighting can be used in bathrooms under the AS/NZS 3000 Lighting Standard so be sure to check with your builder or electrician before purchase.
13. Floor to ceiling tiles
Floor to ceiling tiles create a lot of discussion on renovation forums. People either love them or loathe them! Regardless, many renovators are choosing to go with this look for its elegance – and there’s no need for painting. While floor to ceiling tiles create a gorgeous, consistent look, they generally cost more and you’ll have a lot more scrubbing to do.
14. Brushed brass and nickel fittings
15. Wood-effect tiles
An emerging trend in keeping with the desire for more natural finishes. Wood look flooring looks soft, elegant and welcoming. Use on floors or walls to create a retro, classical, shabby chic or even minimalist look.
We also expect to see more bathrooms blurring the lines of interior/exterior with indoor bathrooms leading into outdoor showers, bathroom courtyard areas, loads of green leafy foliage and large sliding doors to bring the outdoors in, perfect for our Sunshine Coast climate.
